GTA 6 vs the Original Vice City — 24 Years Between Two Miamis
On November 19, 2026, Rockstar takes the series back to Vice City for the first time since 2002. Twenty-four years separate the two games, and the gap is not just graphical — GTA 6 and the original GTA: Vice City are built on completely different ideas of what an open world is for.
You can play the 2002 game right now in the free browser version and judge for yourself. Here is how they compare.

The map: city vs. state
The 2002 Vice City is two small islands you can cross in under three minutes. That compactness is a feature — almost every block has a mission, an asset, a hidden package or a stunt jump on it. Density per square metre is arguably still unmatched in the series.
GTA 6 goes the opposite direction. Vice City is now one region of six, sitting inside a whole fictional state with wetlands, an island chain, a national park and a decaying port town. Rockstar has confirmed the new Vice City alone is substantially larger than the 2002 city, with far more interiors and landmarks. We break down every confirmed region in our GTA 6 map guide.
Tone: neon pastiche vs. modern satire
Vice City is a loving 1980s genre exercise — Scarface and Miami Vice filtered through pastel and synth-pop, with a soundtrack that does more world-building than the script does. Its satire is broad and affectionate.
GTA 6 is set in the present, and everything shown so far points at a sharper, more uncomfortable kind of satire — social media, influencer culture, and modern Florida as a place rather than a postcard. Whether that lands is the open question of the year.
What the original still does better
- Pace. Vice City respects your time. Missions start fast, fail fast and restart fast.
- The radio. Nine stations, each with a host and an arc. Still the best soundtrack in the medium — we ranked all nine.
- Density. No traversal filler. Everything is close to everything else.
- It is free and instant. No console, no $80, no 150 GB install.
What GTA 6 will obviously do better
Everything technical, and it is not close — simulation depth, world reactivity, interiors, weather, physics, mission design that does not rely on a checkpoint-free defence sequence being hard. Twenty-four years is a very long time in engine terms.
The best thing to do before November
Replay the original. Three months is enough for a comfortable full run, GTA 6 is going to be in constant conversation with the 2002 game, and knowing the old map makes the new one far more interesting — you will spot what Rockstar kept, what it moved, and what it deliberately left behind.
Start here: the free browser version runs the full story in a browser tab, on a laptop, Chromebook or phone. If you want to squeeze the most out of the replay, the 100 % checklist will keep you busy right up to launch day.
