GTA: Vice City vs San Andreas — Which Classic Actually Holds Up?
It is the oldest argument in the series. Vice City came out in 2002 and San Andreas in 2004, and the two years between them produced two very different ideas of what a GTA should be. Here is how they actually compare in 2026.
The numbers
| Vice City (2002) | San Andreas (2004) | |
|---|---|---|
| Map size | ~5.6 km² | ~31.6 km² |
| Setting | One city, 1986 | Three cities + countryside, 1992 |
| Protagonist | Tommy Vercetti | Carl "CJ" Johnson |
| Story missions | 59 | 100+ |
| Radio stations | 9 | 11 |
San Andreas is roughly five to six times larger. That is the headline, and it is also the least interesting fact about the comparison.
Where San Andreas wins
- Scope. Three cities, desert, countryside, mountains. Nothing before it was close.
- Mechanics. Swimming, climbing, stamina, weapon skills, vehicle customisation, gang territory. It is a far deeper systems game.
- Story ambition. CJ's arc is longer, more personal and better structured than Tommy's.
- Content volume. You can put a hundred hours in and still find new things.
Where Vice City wins
- Density. Vice City has almost no traversal filler. Every block has something on it, because there were only so many blocks. San Andreas has long stretches of nothing.
- Pace. Missions start fast and restart fast. San Andreas asks you to drive across a state to retry a five-minute mission.
- Atmosphere. The 1986 neon-and-pastel identity is more coherent than San Andreas's sprawling 1992. We ranked all nine stations — the soundtrack does more world-building than most games manage with cutscenes.
- It respects your time. A full Vice City run is a weekend. San Andreas is a month.
The honest verdict
If you are asking which is the better game, San Andreas — more of everything, and its systems still feel modern. If you are asking which is the better game to actually play in 2026, Vice City, because finishing it is realistic and every hour is dense.
There is also a timing argument. GTA 6 returns to Vice City on November 19, 2026, which makes the 2002 game the direct ancestor of the biggest release of the year. Replaying it now means you will recognise what Rockstar keeps and what it discards — see GTA 6 vs the original Vice City.
The practical tiebreaker
You can play Vice City free in a browser right now, with no install, no console and no purchase — the free browser version runs the full 2002 game on a laptop, Chromebook or phone. San Andreas has no equivalent. For a lot of people that settles it.
