GTA: Vice City Easter Eggs and Secrets You Probably Missed

Vice City is a small map that rewards poking at it. Twenty-four years on, people are still finding things. Here are the GTA: Vice City easter eggs worth going out of your way for — all of them still present in the free browser version.

The actual Easter egg

Hidden in a secret room near the VCN building is a giant chocolate Easter egg sitting on a pedestal. It does nothing whatsoever. It is the most literal easter egg Rockstar has ever hidden, and it is probably the game's single most famous secret.

The Scarface apartment

An otherwise ordinary apartment recreates the infamous chainsaw bathroom scene from Scarface — the film that is the single biggest influence on the entire game. Vice City's plot, its mansion, its final shootout and its whole aesthetic all trace back there, so the recreation reads as a credit rather than a joke.

Two men in cement shoes

Swim down and you will find two bodies wearing cement shoes on the seabed. One sits north of 1102 Washington Street, along the south-western coast. The other is east of Skumole Shack, on the searock between Downtown and Leaf Links. Nothing marks them and nothing comes of finding them.

Ghost Town

Players discovered leftover development geometry floating beyond the edge of the map, since nicknamed Ghost Town. It is unfinished level data that never got removed — reachable only by getting outside the intended world. The browser build ships the same data, so it is still out there.

Shoot the moon

At night, shoot the moon with a sniper rifle and it changes size. Keep shooting and it keeps cycling. A GTA series tradition that started in GTA 3 and survived into Vice City.

"Rockster" Video Games

In Ocean Beach, just north of the Pole Position Club, there is a store called Rockster Video Games — Rockstar writing themselves into their own city, one letter off.

The developer's headstone

In Little Haiti there is a funeral home, Funeraria Romero. One of the headstones outside reads "Steven Mullholland RIP" — a real map designer who worked on both Vice City and San Andreas, memorialised in the world he helped build.

How to go looking

Most of these need a helicopter or a boat and a willingness to leave the mission markers alone for an hour. Buy the Hyman Condo ($14,000) for its guaranteed Maverick spawn, or collect 100 hidden packages for a Hunter. The map guide covers the districts each of these sits in.

Go find them — the free browser version loads in a browser tab, and the secrets are all exactly where they were in 2002.
