GTA: Vice City Browser Saves Explained — Local Saves, Cloud Saves & Save Keys
The most common question about the browser version of GTA: Vice City after "how is this possible?" is "will my progress survive?" Short answer: yes — here's exactly how.
Local saves: automatic
When you save at a safehouse, the save file is written to your browser's storage (IndexedDB) on your device. Close the tab, restart, come back next week — your save is there. Two caveats:
- Clearing browsing data deletes local saves. "Clear site data" means your Vercetti empire too.
- Private/incognito windows don't persist. Play in a normal window if you care about progress.
Cloud saves: your save key
On the start screen you can enter a save key — a short identifier you choose. With a key set, your saves are also stored server-side, tied to that key. Enter the same key on any other device and continue where you left off: desktop at home, phone on the bus, Chromebook anywhere.
Choosing a good save key
Save keys are simple by design — no account, no password. That means anyone who knows your key can load your save, so treat it like a PIN:
- Don't use
12345or your name. - Mix letters and numbers.
- Don't reuse something you use as a real password elsewhere.
Practical save strategy
- Save in more than one slot. Classic GTA rule — some story states are nicer to reload than others, and cheats can mark a save permanently (see our cheats guide).
- Save before the famous difficulty spikes. "Demolition Man" and "The Driver" have ended many playthroughs (our tips post covers both).
- Set a save key on day one — retroactively syncing a local-only save is not a thing.
